Phacoemulsifcation is performed by inserting an ultrasonic probe into the eye to soften and emulsify the hardened lens so that it can be removed by asiration through a titanium needle. Incisions have become smaller with the advent of Intra Occular Lenses (IOL).
Smaller incision techniques used in phacoemulsification offer better post operative benefits, including faster recovery time and lower incidence of astigmatism. Phacoemulsification allows the surgeon more control and the patient less physical trauma.
